THE WORK, UNDERSTOOD.
Progressive overload calculator
Compare two completed sets. See load, reps and an estimated-strength change separately, before deciding what the numbers mean.
Example inputs are prefilled. Replace them with two completed sets of the same exercise.
How the comparison works
Epley estimated 1RM = load × (1 + reps ÷ 30). A recorded single returns the load lifted. The tool accepts 1–10 reps, rounds displayed estimates and uses the same formula for both sets. It does not average competing formulas or assign a precision score.
Example: 80 kg × 8 gives about 101 kg; 80 kg × 9 gives 104 kg. That is a 2.6% change in the estimate, not a measured 2.6% increase in physiological strength.
When the comparison is limited
Use completed sets of the same exercise and equipment. Differences in technique, range of motion, effort or conditions change the interpretation. A set stopped early cannot reveal how many reps you could have completed. This tool does not ask you to attempt a maximum or recommend a heavier load.
LeSuer et al. examined prediction equations across bench press, squat and deadlift. Their study does not establish one universal error margin for arbitrary exercises or people. Read our calculation and evidence method.
