THE WORK, UNDERSTOOD.
Workout volume calculator
Add the sets you completed. See total reps, external volume load and each exercise’s contribution to the session.
Example session prefilled. One row assumes the same reps and load for every set. Add separate rows when they differ. Calculations stay in your browser.
The arithmetic is simple. The interpretation needs context.
For identical sets: sets × reps × external load. Three sets of 80 kg × 8 = 1,920 kg of volume load. Add another identical set and the total becomes 2,560 kg. Your best comparable set did not change.
Use a consistent counting rule
Enter separate rows if load or reps vary across sets. Decide whether dumbbell load is per hand or combined and keep that convention. Warm-ups count only if you enter them. Body mass and movement distance are not included; no automatic muscle-group assignment is made.
What this total cannot tell you
Volume load is not energy expenditure, work in joules or measured muscle growth. Totals from different exercises and machines may not be comparable. The bar chart shows contribution to the recorded total, not contribution to adaptation.
A review of volume-equating methods discusses the limits of sets, repetitions and volume load when comparing protocols. A primary comparison study found different volume measures give different protocol comparisons. These sources inform the limits; the calculation itself is arithmetic.
